Individual Supervision

Clinical supervision and training have always been a significant part of my practice. My experiences include a Clinical Instructor appointment to the Harvard Medical School, senior faculty positions, and consultation to college counseling centers. I supervise practitioners from diverse mental health disciplines at all levels of experience.

Individual supervision can be scheduled weekly or bi-weekly, for 45 – 60 minutes. The fee for supervision is based on a sliding scale of $150 – $250 per session. In times of clinical urgency, I am also available, without charge, for email or phone contact between supervision appointments.

I also offer a Clinical Dilemmas Supervision Group, which can be a dynamic way to explore the challenges that arise in practice with their peers as well as with my guidance.

Group Supervision

  • “My client always comes to sessions but doesn’t change. She brings up the same issues but it never goes anywhere. How can I deepen the work?”
  • “I don’t like working with my client. What can I do? Should I refer him elsewhere?”
  • “My client’s psychiatrist (nutritionist, PCP or other provider) has a different approach from mine. How can I communicate effectively with the treatment team?”

Above are some examples of clinical dilemmas that many therapists encounter. Psychodynamic theory offers a comprehensive way to understand these common situations and provides strategies for effective intervention. Psychodynamic ideas can enhance the treatment success of any modality, including CBT.

The values implicit in the for-profit insurance business have powerfully shaped the expectations of clients and providers alike, and how we evaluate ourselves as professionals. Too often an exclusive focus on symptom reduction has discouraged us from viewing our clients in their full complexity.

Some major psychodynamic sources of understanding include:

  • How developmental history is repeated and elaborated in the present life of the client
  • The therapeutic relationship, including transference and countertransference
  • Empathic listening—attunement to affect in our clients and in ourselves

Format:

Group size limited to 4 – 5 participants. Typically there will be two presentations each session, with some time for other participants to raise immediate concerns. Presentations should include sufficient detail to allow for high quality discussion without being burdensome to prepare, while being mindful of patient confidentiality and privacy. Presentation guidelines will be reviewed at the first meeting.

Groups meet for 75 minutes weekday evenings, bi-weekly or monthly, based on the interests and schedules of the participants. $45 per session, sliding scale can be arranged with the instructor.
